Kavanagh Fined and Winner Banned in Adelaide
An inquiry into a post-race sample taken from PLAY TO WIN after being placed second in Race 6 - Lucky Horseshoe Handicap - 1450 metres on Saturday, 10 December 2005 containing the substance Betamethasone, continued at the Morphettville Offices yesterday.
Further evidence was taken from Dr. J. Vine, Director, Racing Analytical Services Limited, the Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory and Dr. W. Marmion.
After considering the evidence, licensed trainer, Mr. M.A.T. Kavanagh, was charged under ARR.178 in that, on Saturday, 10 December 2005, the racehorse PLAY TO WIN was brought to Cheltenham Park Racecourse to engage in Race 6 following which a urine sample taken from PLAY TO WIN had been found to contain a prohibited substance, namely Betamethasone. Mr. Kavanagh pleaded guilty and was fined $5,000.
Dr. Marmion, the attending Veterinary Surgeon, was cautioned that in similar circumstances in future, where Stewards were satisfied that treatment of a racehorse had resulted in a prohibited substance being detected, Stewards may consider an option to lay a charge under the Rules.
Acting under ARR.177, as Stewards were satisfied Betamethasone was a prohibited substance under the Rules, PLAY TO WIN was disqualified from Race 6 - Lucky Horseshoe Handicap at Cheltenham Park on Saturday, 10 December 2005.
